Cleveland Screenings

mamafilm is will launch a series in Cleveland, OH in Spring 2020. Support the mamafilmCLE series with a donation and join the mailing list to stay up to date on the upcoming series!

mamafilmcle is brought to you by Mallory Martin, Debby Samples & Laura Wiegand, three Cleveland film-lovers and mamas in different stages of nurturehood, who were immediately drawn to this concept of representation and community. We all experience film differently but know the power it carries. It is an art form, an escape, an education tool, and a reason to gather. We are honored and excited to bring mamafilm to Cleveland – to create a touchpoint for our community of nurturers, and amplify our shared experiences.

Cleveland International Film Festival is a proud community partner for CIFF44’s screening of:

PERSONHOOD | Tuesday, March 31, 7:00 PM & Wednesday, April 01, 2020 at 2:25 PM | Tower City Cinemas
Directed by Jo Ardinger
USA, 2019, 80m.

Sadly, CIFF 44 has been cancelled. We’ll keep you posted as to where you can watch PERSONHOOD!

“Personhood,” according to the United States Constitution, legally guarantees the fundamental rights of life, liberty, and property. While the term has long been understood to be established at birth, a growing contingent of the pro-life movement is advocating for fetuses to be granted those rights as well. And the consequences for pregnant women—especially low-income women and women of color—are overwhelmingly disconcerting in the face of mass incarceration in America. Jo Ardinger’s documentary PERSONHOOD follows the story of Tammy Loertscher, a Wisconsin resident who was forcibly detained while pregnant after she revealed her history of depression and drug use to her doctor. Unfortunately, Loertscher’s experience is not unique. Supported by the National Advocates for Pregnant Women and the United Nations, Loertscher is now working to ensure the rights of other pregnant women aren’t compromised in favor of the fetuses. Ardinger’s enlightening documentary makes a compelling case for safeguarding the personhood of pregnant women.

THE GUYS NEXT DOOR | Thursday, October 24th, 6:30pm, Forest City Brewery
Directed by Amy Geller & Allie Humenuk, 2016, USA, 74 min.

“The Guys Next Door is about gently opening hearts and minds: it delicately demonstrates through one small story how easy it would be to recognize our common humanity.” –  ArtFuse

“In their beautifully filmed feature-length production, Allie Humenuk and Amy Geller… tell a very ordinary story of an extraordinary family…” – Eye For Film

THE GUYS NEXT DOOR is an intimate portrait of a real “Modern Family.” Meet Erik and Sandro, a gay married couple whose friend Rachel is a surrogate for their two daughters. Rachel, who is in her 40s, is married to Tony and they have three children. Together, they form a unique extended family. Spanning over three years, this lyrical documentary tackles some of the most pertinent issues of our time: gay marriage and parenting, surrogacy as a path to having children, and the extension and redefinition of what it means to be “an American family.”
